I stumbled across this book accidentally in the stacks of my university library about 15 years ago. I found it so fascinating that I sat down and read most of it, though I was supposed to be researching another topic. This was about the time that Amy Dacyzyn’s Tightwad Gazette books were very popular, and I had a budding interest in the subject of thrift, the simple life, etc.
I particularly enjoyed the window Tucker gives into how different the cultural milieu was in times past, especially in 19th century America. I remember really enjoying learning about Sarah J. Hale and her exertions for engendering a morality of thrift among women.
I have not seen this book since that day in the library; I didn’t even check it out at the time, but I have frequently thought of it, though not until today did I bother to search for it. I didn’t even really remember the full title–but this is definitely it. If it were offered for a reasonable price, I would buy it. I will keep my eye out for it.
