You can actually look up more than once a year for free. The three major credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Transunion, and Experian – you can lookup each of these once a year, that makes you total count up to three.
You can look up Equifax in April, Transunion in August, and Experian in December, for example.

It does not hurt your score when you pull your own credit report. I use truecredit.com. Best site with the most features.

When you access your own credit report, this is called a “soft inquiry”. On the other hand, if it’s a lender who requests your credit score, that’s a “hard inquiry”. Only hard inquiries count towards the computation of your credit score.
For a comprehensive explanation of credit scores, check this book I recommended in one of my blog’s posts:http://ontheroadto1m.wordpress.com/2009/…
