The actual US Federal law states you are entitled to one free report from each of the 3 major credit bureaus. I request one at a time ever 4 months.
As another answer stated https://www.annualcreditreport.com/ is the official site to receive the report. If you go directly to a credit bureau, you WILL NOT receive the no strings free report, but they will offer a free report with a trial membership in a credit monitoring service that will cost you WAY too much is you don’t jump though the proper hoops to cancel before the trail period ends.
Susan’s answer has one minor error. https://www.annualcreditreport.com/ is NOT a government website. It is run by the 3 major credit bureaus. That said, everything else in her answer is correct.

As of September 1, 2005, everyone in the U.S. is entitled to receive one free credit report every 12 months from each of the three major credit bureaus each year, Equifax, TransUnion and Experian.
Be extremely careful of thousands of sites that try to sell you a report. The site: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/ is the only government site. Please read the FTC report regarding fraudulent sites.
You can also get your free credit report via phone by calling 877-322-8228.
