A friend says that disputing errors on your credit report online is LESS effective than mailing a letter to the bureaus. Is this true?

Very simple answer to this question: Yes! Put everything in writng when doing any type of business with anyone. And, also keep a copy and date mailed. Good habit to get into.

Nope, not true at all…. if anything, it is more effective.

Using a certified letter will allow you to get a physical signature. Should you have to go to court this would be better evidence than e-mail. E-mails can be changed very easily. If you go to http://www.your-credit-solution.com you can find a free sample credit repair letter with all three bureaus addresses. Good Luck on your resolution.

I don’t know about the effectiveness, they are actually probably just as effective either way. However, mailing in disputes has several advantages over the On-Line dispute.
First unless it is a very simple dispute, you usually need to send in documentation to back up your position. There is no way to send in documents on-line. So, they will look at the dispute and then send you a letter requesting this documentation. In the end you end up sending it through the mail anyways. Second, if there is a problem with them saying they did not receive the dispute when you send it by mail you can do a certified mail with return receipt. This proves that you sent it and they received it. Now, when you do it on line it can also be tracked, but that still requires you rely on them to have the record.
